To take a song as overplayed as “Wonderwall” and make it sound new and fresh is a feat not many bands can achieve; but Bring Me the Horizon did. Bring Me the Horizon consists of lead singer Oli Sykes, guitarist Lee Malia, bassist Matt Kean and drummer Matt Nichols. Their version of “Wonderwall”, part of a “Spotify Singles” collection, starts off with an urgent guitar and understated vocals. Then Nichols’ drums come in with a scream from Sykes. It flows into more pulse-pounding drums while including gang vocals that recall the original. It also adds more screams in “about you now!” and “every step I take!”. The fast pace, heavy guitars and screams make it feel like a new song. It does pay homage to the original toward the end with the same guitar riff from the end of “Wonderwall”. It hearkens to what alternative rapper nothing, nowhere is doing right now with his “Will it emo?” collection. Like the original “Wonderwall”, this cover will get stuck in your head.
